The Honourable Seamus O’Regan is Strategic Counsel at Global Public Affairs. He is a former Cabinet Minister and Member of Parliament for St. John’s South – Mount Pearl.

Seamus was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland and spent his early years in Goose Bay, Labrador. Seamus gained early experience working with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for over five years in the office of the Minister of Justice & Attorney General and then later in the office of the Premier, Brian Tobin.

He spent a year abroad studying with INSEAD in Paris and retuned to Canada to pursue journalism first Co-Hosting CTV’s Talk TV’s The Chatroom and then going on to Co-Host Canada AM.

During his time on Canada AM, he interviewed many newsmakers including President Bill Clinton, Prime Ministers Jean Chretien, Paul Martin and Stephen Harper, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Shania Twain, William Shatner, Conrad Black and Prince.  He is one of the few journalists to have interviewed four former Prime Ministers all together – Brian Mulroney, Kim Campbell, John Turner and Joe Clark.

After Canada AM, he remained as a National News Reporter with CTV News before leaving broadcasting to pursue private sector roles and then run for election as a Member of Parliament in 2015.  Seamus was elected as MP for St. John’s South—Mount Pearl in 2015 and represented that riding until 2025. During his time as MP he held various Cabinet positions including Minister of Natural Resources, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Associate Minister of National Defence, Minister of Indigenous Services, Minister of Labour, and Minister of Seniors.

He has served in numerous roles in the Government of Canada over the years, including Member of the Prime Minister’s Agenda, Results and Communications Committee and the Canada-US, COVID, Reconciliation and Defence Procurement Cabinet Committees. Seamus was a long-standing member of the Treasury Board, as well as Chair of the Ministerial Working Group on Regulatory Efficiency and Clean Growth.

Seamus serves as Senior Business Advisor with Stewart McKelvey, the largest law firm in Atlantic Canada. He is Chair of the CoIC Innovation Centre in St John’s, a board member of Power Metallic Mines, and a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society.

He studied politics at St. Francis Xavier University and University College, Dublin, and marketing strategies at INSEAD, near Paris.  He graduated with a Master of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge, with a focus on Indigenous participation in large-scale natural resource development.
