The Honourable Darrell Dexter is a Vice Chair at Global Public Affairs and an Honourary Distinguished Fellow at Dalhousie University’s MacEachen Institute. He joined Global Public Affairs in 2015 and supports experts across the country.
Before joining Global, he led the Nova Scotia New Democratic Party (NDP) from 2001, becoming the 27th Premier of Nova Scotia and forming the first provincial NDP government in Atlantic Canada. His premiership was marked by achievements such as a renewable energy strategy, progressive social policies, controlled spending, reduced small business taxes, and notable environmental policies. He received the Climate Leadership in Canada award at the 2009 UN Climate Change Conference. As Chair of the Council of the Federation from 2012-13, he advanced initiatives including a trade mission to China, the Pan-Canadian Pharmaceutical Alliance, and improved interprovincial trade.
A former journalist, Canadian Armed Forces member, and MLA, Darrell’s work encompassed energy, healthcare, housing, and governance. He has since been active in democracy-building projects, leading election observer missions, and serving on boards including Alderney Landing Cultural Centre and The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs.
He holds a Bachelor of Education and a Law degree from Dalhousie University and a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Journalism from the University of King’s College.
