The Canadian Football League Alumni Association (CFLAA) has announced the creation of an advisory board on the topic of medical cannabis. The advisory board will be chaired by the Honourable Darrell Dexter, former Premier of Nova Scotia.
“We are pleased to announce Darrell Dexter, Vice Chair of Global Public Affairs and Chair of their cannabisCONNECT practice has been appointed to chair an expert panel to provide recommendations to the CFLAA and our members on issues related to medical cannabis. The creation of this advisory board will assist us in meeting our mandate of providing support and education to former players experiencing medical challenges and to gain further insight into the benefits of medical cannabis in managing chronic pain – insight that could be invaluable to our almost 2,000 alumni members,” said Leo Ezerins, Executive Director, CFLAA.

The advisory panel will provide fact-based recommendations to the CFLAA based on a thorough review of emerging medical evidence and evolving public policy. This follows the CFLAA’s May 2018 announcement that it was collaborating with MedReleaf, a leading Canadian licensed producer of cannabis, in studying the benefits of medical cannabis in managing chronic pain.
“I am honoured to be appointed to chair this important panel that will support former CFL players in making informed decisions on the use of medical cannabis. Players may face a variety of medical challenges in their post-athletic careers and the use of medical cannabis has the potential to play an important part in enhancing players’ physical health,” said Dexter.
Members of the advisory board will be announced in the coming weeks and will include experts from the medical and legal communities, as well as former players. The board will provide recommendations and guidance to the CFLAA and its members, to be delivered to the CFLAA executive in advance of the Grey Cup Festival the week of November 25th,2018.
