Global Public Affairs (Global) is recruiting an experienced communications professional to join our growing B.C. public affairs team and national Communications Practice. The work includes providing government relations, stakeholder relations and communications advice and support on some of the most high-profile issues, projects, and policy developments of the day. To this end, a keen interest in public policy, politics and current events is a must.

Based in our Vancouver office, the ideal candidate will be highly organized, proactive, strategic, and possess strong verbal, written and digital communication skills. Specific attributes include:

  • Ability to advance client objectives through effective and integrated communications and government relations strategies, rooted in a strong political and policy acumen.
  • Ability to facilitate constructive discussion on communications objectives through keen understanding of communications principles, concepts and methodologies including issues management, media relations and digital media production.
  • Ability to work within tight deadlines, maintain confidentiality, and stay highly organized across a diverse roster of well-known clients.
  • Strong presentation skills with experience media training or as a communications advisor.
  • A high level of efficiency, accuracy, and attention to detail.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 8-10 years of combined experience in the field of corporate and/or government communications, with a strong understanding of how government works and interacts with the private sector. Agency and traditional mass media experience considered an asset but not required. Specific expertise, skills and qualifications include:

  • Relevant background in communications, media relations, digital media campaigns and issues management.
  • Experience in strategic communications planning, execution, and progress tracking.
  • Experience in communications product development, including PowerPoint decks, new releases, backgrounders, and digital products.
  • Experience in stakeholder/partner engagement and activation.
  • Creative abilities and strong understanding of the digital media landscape and trends.
  • Experience tailoring client-specific reports using media monitoring and analytics tools.
  • Experience in managing or crafting digital media strategies, including paid marketing.
  • Experience with crisis communications and issues management.
  • Experience leading communications teams.

Reporting to the Vice President, British Columbia, this position offers a positive and inclusive hybrid work environment and the opportunity to grow and collaborate with colleagues and clients across the country. The Director is the key contributor and lead on major client projects. They will maintain a diverse client portfolio and remain current in clients’ day-to-day affairs as well as build contacts. The Director is able to give briefings on relevant projects, clients, and issues on short notice, and respond to tight deadlines and urgent matters, without neglecting longer-term client work. The Director is also responsible for supporting business development activities including networking, mentoring and directing junior staff.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Client Service

  • Organizes and implements offerings for clients in strategic communications, media relations, digital and social media as well as crisis communications and issues management.
  • Leads client files and focuses on excellent client service.
  • Organizes client meeting programs and coordinate follow-up (assist in the preparation of contact plans, meeting agendas, briefing materials, etc.)
  • Drafts and reviews briefing materials for events and lobby days and assists with coordination and execution as needed.
  • Delivers policy and issue-based research for reports and thought leadership pieces.
  • Monitors parliamentary activity and policy development processes relevant to client files and prepares client updates.

Business Development and Marketing

  • Supports the strategic direction of the communications practice and assists in its growth path and external marketing activities.
  • Works to develop business relationships for the communications practice to achieve growth targets.
  • Expands and develops business within existing accounts.
  • Identifies, targets and closes on prospective new clients with an increasingly level of business acumen and understanding.
  • Maintains strong involvement in marketing, networking, and business development functions and is comfortable with public speaking and presenting.
  • Mentors and develops junior team members by providing regular feedback and opportunities for them as appropriate.
